Walk In My Shoes
Exhibition
April 5 - April 30, 2021
This online exhibition is a collection of images that reflect worn and embellished shoes that embody the mantra, “walk a mile in my shoes.” This adage has been adapted over the years in motto and in song to remind us to show tolerance and empathy when dealing with people we do not know. Each image is a testament to the untold story and the journey shoes have traveled throughout the lives of these individuals.
Thank You to all those who contributed to the exhibition. In addition, a special thanks to our sponsors City of Dallas Office of Art and Culture: Culture of Value, Artcycleclubtx.com and private donations.

Dusting off forgotten memories. A rush of remembrance, some hazy or gone forever. The stories of life lived, family, friends, past deeds, challenges, hopes, dreams.
These are my father's yardwork shoes that stay by the back door. They remind me to water the garden, pull the weeds and cut the grass.
This photo documents the feeling of loss I have since losing my mom.
This is a paining I created using my favorite shoes during college in Florida A&M University colors. The show was created using watercolor, colored pencils, and white gel pens. The background was created using oil pastels.

These shoes were my grandfather's. I wear them proudly to special events. It is a constant reminder of walking in greatness.
These shoes were worn to countless athletic and family events. Now this person has passed on. Where will these shoes take the next person that wears them?
Glitzy. Glamorous. Expensive. That's me!
I am inspired by colors, because I think life is colorful. According to Forrest Gump, "You can tell a lot about a person, just looking at their shoes." It's good to look at the bright side of life. This is why I chose to paint my favorite pair of shoes to represent myself in such a colorful way.

Back in the 70's I bought boots and matching jacket with Eisenhower cut. Went to a club, my jacket was stolen. $800 gone, so I wore it one time.

Shoes only last 2-3 months on my feet.

In 2004, I began a trek with a pair of trusty Clark mules to , but not enough. walk Africa. Beginning with Nigeria, then Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Ghana. I've trekked a few places in Africa with my Clarks, but not enough. As the Lord wills, my Clarks (several pairs, I'm sure) will trek me over the entire continent one day...all 54 countries!
We travel everyday. Some places from routine and obligation, and other places from adventure and joy. We immerse ourselves in each location with our attention, energy, and time. These shoes accompanied me in walks for more than 4 years. As I walked towards this mural, I’m reminded that art is how I want to live and immerse myself. No matter what type of art I encounter, I gravitate towards it with appreciation for its own story.
My mother had a habit of buying things in multiple colors. These particular shoes she bought in black, white, and pink.
The road is never a smooth or straight path. You can choose to step forward, backwards, or in circles. In these modern times, we fabricate in our minds that we have to reach certain milestones. These different brick and stone textures reflect that we can choose to embrace the bumps and imperfections that are part of our being. Life isn’t all about the destinations, but it’s how we find joy in all moments.
I put on these Skecher Yoga Foam shoes as I exit the garage to begin my day. When the soles and heels of my feet land on these with each walking step, I feel the support from the material. The sole texture absorbs and takes shape of my footprint then bounces back to it’s foundational texture. The shoe material takes me back to the yoga mat, a place of mindfulness and being. A state of mind that I can simply exist and be present.
The title says it all. When things become too painful, that's when we are forced to change. We can avoid discomfort if we listen to our bodies and our intuition, but change, no matter how good, is what we fear. The unknown...
My Life Series - This paining (acrylic) depicts the journey of my two sons from babies to men and then their babies. The journey was tough at times but so worth it - two great men and six grandchildren.

Its takes place on a beautiful summer day on a front porch, eating some ice cold watermelon. My best friend introduced me to some of the best "foot-tappin" music I'd ever heard: DAN HICKS AND HIS HOT LICKS.

I don't drive anymore, so this is how I get around. They're a little beat up, just like me, but they do the job and do it well. Colored Pencil and Collage, 11x14 in.
My Life Series - This drawing (mixed media of graphite, charcoal and soft pastels) is for my journey with my partner Robert. He's been with me for 27 years so his shoes are worn out.
My Life Series - This painting (acrylic), on a pair of my worn out shoes, shows my happy place - walking on the beach.
My husband and I walk miles every day. Needless to say, we wear out shoes. Now, I don’t mind replacing them especially when there are holes in the soles, but it really irked me when recently a hole came out on the upper! “Peek a Boo” is the result of coping with this frustration. To mend the hole, a reverse applique technique seemed the best option. A carefully cut cat face from a Laurel Burch feline print scrap was placed underneath. It was difficult stitching it down through the shoes.
Most artists I know tend to be collectors. Whether it's books, brushes, ephemera or found objects - we are often keepers of the lost and found. Sentimental pieces, hand-me-downs, peacock feathers, handwritten notes, treasures found on the side of the road...even an old pair of forgotten boots become muse.

These were my father's workboots, used when working in the East Texas oil fields.
I am like the shoes I wear. When seen by others in these fancy heels, I appear confident and worry free. But no one can see my rips and tears from this life nor the ones inside my shoes.
